Herbert Shorter

Herbert Lee Shorter was born on December 31, 1971, to the late Juanita Owens Shorter and Doyle Shorter. Herbert entered his eternal home on Thursday, October 5, 2023, in Des Moines, Iowa. Herbert was known to his family and friends as “Herk”.  Herk grew up in Davenport, Iowa where he attended public school. Herk accepted Christ at a young age while he attended Mt Olive Church of God in Christ. He confessed his love for the Lord and never wavered from it.

Herk worked several jobs throughout his life, but his passion and special talent was cutting hair. Herk was a "mobile barber" who took tremendous joy and assurance in serving his regular customers. He took great pride in his work and always ensured his customers were happy. Herk continued to service his customers until his health started to decline.

Herk was preceded in death by his parents, Juanita, and Doyle Shorter, and one sister Betty Shorter Wilson. He leaves to cherish his memories four children, Diamonte, Charquita, Janya, and Hermia. He also leaves five brothers and three sisters. Willie Shorter (Terry) of Des Moines, Iowa, Eddie Shorter (Irie) of Houston, Texas, Alon, Dale & Alonzo Shorter, all of Davenport, Iowa.  His sisters, Doris Ann (Johnny) of Davenport, Iowa, Selena Shorter of Des Moines, Iowa, Angela Shorter of Houston, Texas, Tammy Shorter of Davenport, Iowa, and a loving, devoted niece who was more like a sister to him Juanita Hinton (Richard), of Davenport, Iowa.

Additionally, Herk also leaves two aunts, Diane Bui and Jerlaline Bryant.   He leaves four uncles, Darnell Owens, Will Arthur Owens, Roland Owens, and Roosevelt Owens, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
