Alma Smith Obituary

Alma Smith age 87 passed away at Unity Point Medical Center on Monday August 26th.

Alma Smith was born on December 9, 1936, to Dock Lee and Mary Alice Holmes-Lee in Louisville, Mississippi. Alma moved to Chicago, II when she was 18 years old. By 1959 she had moved back to her hometown in Mississippi and married Varsie V. Smith and started her family. In 1966 Alma moved to Rock Island, IL. At 80, she retired from Friendship Manor after 31 years of service as a dietary aid. Alma enjoyed spending time with her family, watching westerns, going to the casino, and cooking. She will be deeply missed.

Left to cherish her memory and celebrate her life are her daughters and sons, Sarah Smith-Stephens (Joe), Almeta Smith, Kenny Lee (Vicki-Lynn), Morgan Smith, Vance Smith (DeAnna), Tim Smith, Thomas Smith, John D. Smith (Lori), and Aaron Smith (Angie).

Alma's sisters and brothers, Rosetta Shields, Shirley Grandberry, Dorris Lee (sister in-law), Louis Lee, and Johnny Lee.

Alma has many nieces and nephews. She has 39 grandchildren; 71 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Alma's close friends include Mamie, Martha, Lois, and Lillie Ruth.

Alma is preceded in death by her parents, Dock and Mary Alice; her son, Alvin Smith; five brothers; and two sisters; grandson Darnel/ Patterson; her husband, Varsie; and close friend, Claire Wakeland.
