Reverend Arthur James Young, age 81, passed away on Friday, December 18, 2020 in Davenport, IA. Arthur was born and raised in Wilmington, NC. He graduated from Williston Senior High School in 1957. After spending a year in New York City, he began college at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical Institute (North Carolina A&T State University) in Greensboro, NC. In 1960, Arthur enlisted into the United States Navy where he served his country for 4 years. As a sailor he traveled all over the world. This developed his love of travel that continued for the rest of his life. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he returned to complete his college degree at North Carolina A & T. He graduated in 1968 and was recruited for a job with John Deere Company, making a move to Rock Island, IL to begin his 17-year career. After his retirement from John Deere, he began a second career as a valued teacher of the Moline District School System, retiring in 2005.
In 1969, Arthur married Linda (Hester) and moved with their son Dwain to a new home in Milan, IL. Also, it was around this time that Arthur was called to preach the gospel. He became an ordained minister. Arthur will always be remembered for his devotion to his family, church, and mentoring young men through the 100 Black Men organization.
Arthur was preceded in death by his father Theodore Young and his mother Louvonyer(Johnson) Young. He is survived by his wife Linda Young, son Dwain Young (Monica) of Greensboro, NC, granddaughter Samantha, sisters Louise Spencer of Calabash, NC and Tenner Hemphill of Chicago, IL, and many nieces and nephews.
Arthur will be forever remembered for his love and dedication to his family and to his faith. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
