Erick W Schurlock

Erick Wayne Schurlock, 57, of Davenport, Iowa, passed away peacefully on the evening of May 29, 2026, at Burlington Hospital. He was born January 7, 1969, in Asmara, Ethiopia, and lived a life defined by resilience, faith, and a steadfast commitment to family and community.

Erick’s life began with a challenge—an early heart defect he faced with uncommon courage. That courage carried him through a life of travel and service: growing up in a military family across Maryland, Japan, and Belgium before settling back in Davenport, Iowa, where he embraced his roots and his roots embraced him in return. He graduated from Davenport West High School, where he was known for his love of bike riding and pool nights shared with cherished friends and his brother EL.

A man devoted to helping others, Erick invested years with United Neighbors, working with and mentoring young people to provide guidance, hope, and a path toward brighter futures. Sundays found him in praise and worship—singing with the Bethel AME Church choir and serving as a guiding presider of the Lay Organization, a testament to a faith that gave him strength and a generous heart toward everyone he met. Erick’s Sundays also carried a faithful streak of Steelers devotion, a shared thread of family and friends gathered to cheer the team he loved with a passion that echoed in the living room, the church hall, and the memories he left with all who knew him.

Erick’s greatest joys were found in family moments—especially the treasured father-son fishing trips that placed him in quiet lakes and open skies, where he spoke softly of faith, hope, and the simple wonders of God’s creation. Those trips formed a rhythm of life that balanced his zeal for living with a deep and abiding love for his father and their shared time on the water.

Erick was surrounded by a loving family who shared in his joys and stood with him through every challenge. He was the son of Georgene and Paul Schurlock and was cherished by his siblings, Fredrica Olds, Evelyn Schurlock, and God given brother El Logan. He will be deeply missed by his aunt Shirley Powell and uncle Warren Schurlock, and by a wide circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who felt the warmth of his humor, his loyalty, and his steadfast presence.

In every season, Erick embodied a spirit of perseverance and hope. He faced life’s trials with a quiet confidence, embodying the words that sustained him: those who hope in the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, run and not be weary, walk and not faint (Isaiah 40:31). He finished his course with courage and grace, living in a way that invited others to trust in something greater than themselves.

Paul’s charge to Timothy spoke to Erick’s life as well: I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Erick’s faith was a daily practice, and his crown of righteousness awaits with the Lord, who is the righteous judge (2 Timothy 4:7-8). His legacy of service, music, community, and faith will continue to inspire those who knew him to persevere with kindness, to lead with integrity, and to love without reserve.

Erick leaves behind his parents Georgene and Paul Schurlock; his siblings Fredrica Olds and Evelyn Schurlock; his aunt and uncle Shirley Powell and Warren Schurlock; nieces and nephews - Brandon Olds, Caleb Olds, Arin Wooten (Janeiro Wooten), and Josephina Wooten; and a wide extended family of cousins and friends who remember him with affection and gratitude.

A memorial service honoring Erick Wayne Schurlock will be held at Bethel AME Church, a place where he gave his voice to song and his heart to service. The viewing will be held at 10am with services following at 11am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Bethel AME Church, a ministry close to Erick’s heart and life’s work, so that his passion for empowering youth and strengthening community may endure.

Rest now, Erick. You have kept the faith, finished the race, and in the quiet places of God’s mercy, you have found your crown. May the God who sustains us grant you eternal peace, and may we, who remain, continue to run with endurance the race that is set before us, until we all meet again.
