John was born on March 6, 1942, in Savage, Mississippi, to Charlie and Ilene (Byers) Munford. He will be remembered as a man of God, quiet but witty and wise; who caste a huge shadow of positivity and love. John’s mother Ilene passed away when he was very young, so he went to live with Mr. Bud and Emma Liddell and family. They moved to East St. Louis, Illinois where he finished growing up and was baptized. John moved to Davenport in 1966, where he later met his wife Georgia, whom he married on November 24th, 1973, in Sikeston, Missouri.
Mr. Munford worked for two companies, Delrich and Long Manufacturing before he landed a job for the City of Bettendorf, Iowa, where he was employed for 27 years with the Department of Sanitation. He earned many merits and a plaque for exemplary service. He retired in 2011 at the age of 70. In the early 70’s Mr. Munford joined his wife and became a member of Third Missionary Baptist Church where he was later ordained as a Deacon.
He is survived by his wife Georgia, two sons, John Bradley Munford of Waukee, IA. and Jeffrey Barnell Munford of Davenport, IA. and a special God-son, Shaun Buckles; also six grandchildren that he loved dearly, Tatiyanna Munford of Whittier, CA., Aulani Munford, Kailana Munford and Dhani Munford of Davenport, IA, Alonzo Munford and Xavier Munford of Waukee, IA.; sisters Louise Munford, Memphis, TN., Mae Pearl McKenzie, East St. Louis, IL., Lela Johnson, Marks, MS, and a brother Eddie Munford, East St. Louis, IL. He was privileged to also have numerous family and friends and a supportive church family.
John was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Rutha Mae, Marlene, Zera and Mae Della and brothers, James Willie and Charlie Earl.
John Munford touched the lives of so many that we could not name them all. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
