Kelvin Jerome Cook was born on October 16, 1981, at University Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, to Sonja Faye Lindsey Cook and Sylvester Cook. From the very beginning, Kelvin was a fighter. Born with significant medical challenges, he overcame tremendous odds as an infant, displaying the courage and determination that would define his life.

Kelvin was raised in Davenport, Iowa, where he attended Davenport North High School and proudly graduated on June 8, 2001. Although he spent much of his life using a wheelchair, Kelvin refused to let his physical limitations determine what he could accomplish. His resilience inspired everyone who knew him.

While in high school, Kelvin proudly represented his school on the track team, competing in and winning wheelchair races. His competitive spirit continued into adulthood as he completed the world-renowned Bix 7 Road Race in the Quad Cities—not once, but twice. These accomplishments reflected the way Kelvin approached life: with perseverance, determination, and an unwavering belief that obstacles were meant to be overcome.

Kelvin was a devoted sports fan whose loyalty never wavered. He passionately cheered for Michael Jordan, the Chicago Bulls, and the Chicago Bears. One of his most treasured childhood memories was attending a Chicago Bulls preseason game in Iowa City, where he had the unforgettable opportunity to meet his hero, Michael Jordan. It was a moment he carried with him for the rest of his life.

More than his accomplishments, Kelvin will be remembered for the way he loved others. He was loving, caring, loyal, and fiercely independent. He believed in making the most of every opportunity and refused to let life pass him by. If Kelvin could leave one final message, it would simply be this: Live your life fully, make good use of the time you've been given, leave no stone unturned, and don't neglect your mental health.

On June 20, 2026, Kelvin peacefully entered eternal rest at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Sonja Faye Lindsey Cook and Sylvester Cook.

He leaves to cherish his memory his brother, Julian Collins (Niema); his sisters, Lisa Cook and Lynn Cook; his nephew, Taylor Collins; his niece, Avary Collins; along with extended family members, cherished friends, and all whose lives were enriched by knowing him.

Kelvin's life was never defined by what he could not do but by everything he chose to do. His courage, resilience, determination, and unwavering spirit leave behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew him. He showed us that life's greatest victories are not measured by circumstances but by the heart with which we face them.

He lived boldly. He loved deeply. He persevered faithfully. And he will never be forgotten.
