On Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014, at 5:33 a.m., God called the lovely Mrs. Mary Phyllis Johnson from labor to rest. Mrs. Johnson was 91 years old.

A celebration of Mrs. Johnson’s life will be held at noon Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 2601 15th St., Moline. The Rev. Dr. Melvin L. Grimes will be officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time. Mrs. Johnson will be laid to rest at Chippiannock Cemetery in Rock Island. Orr’s Mortuary is assisting the family.

Mary Phyllis Overton was born May 10, 1923, to Samuel and Pauline Golden Overton. On Sept. 28, 1941, she married Mr. Paul Wesley Johnson in Rock Island. The Johnson’s were married 57 years when Mr. Johnson passed away on Dec. 8, 1998.

Mrs. Johnson enjoyed traveling, spending quality time with her family; bingo, shopping, and as her family and friends know, she was an outstanding cook. Mrs. Johnson confessed her faith in Christ at a very young age, and she was a very active member of the former Wayman AME church in Rock Island.

Mrs. Johnson meant so much to so many, her kindness, loving and caring heart, wittiness, infectious laugh, fun loving and sweet spirit will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Left with loving and cherished memories are her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Melvin Rummels of Rock Island; her brother August (Augie) Overton, Davenport; three grandchildren, Kelvin and Belita Rummels, Davenport, Jon Rummels, Minneapolis, Minn., and Paula Rummels, Rock Island; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters and a large host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers.
