Funeral services for Mother Sally M. Thomas,83, of Davenport, IA will be 11:00 a.m. Friday at Mount Olive Church of God in Christ. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Davenport.
Visitation will be 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Mount Olive Church of God in Christ
Wednesday, February 3, 2021, Mother Sally Thomas was called to rest from her labor at Manor Care Nursing Home, Davenport, Iowa.
Mother Sally Thomas was born December 20th,1937 in Hannibal Missouri to Raymond Porter and Alice Mae Washington. She graduated from Douglas High School in Hannibal. She was a teacher’s aide for four years at Hawthorne Elementary in Rock Island. She later became a physical therapist aide at Franciscan Hospital currently known as Trinity. She enjoyed transporting patients for 23 and ½ years, and on December 31, 1996 she retired.
Sally Thomas bore two children, Kimberly Porter and John Ross. On June 2nd, 1979, Sally married the love of her life, Alonza Thomas and became a stepmother to seven children. At the age of 60 Sally became a grandmother to Joneise whom she cherished and adored.
Mother Sally Thomas was a faithful and active member of Mount Olive COGIC for over 45 years. During those 45 years she served under the leadership of Pastor Williams Frison, Pastor Donell Owens, and Pastor Cornelius Boone. Missionary Thomas spent her time ministering in the jails and praying with patients in nursing homes. Mother Sally’s ministry was a small demonstration of her love for Christ. She enjoyed caring for the sick, sharing her testimony, reading the Bible, constantly praying over people and things for God’s protection, caring for her husband, and spreading the gospel to everyone she encountered. She could often be heard telling strangers, “God loves you!” Mother Sally enjoyed listening to gospel music and working on word search puzzles during her rare moments of rest. She also enjoyed being on the go and traveling. Mother Sally Thomas was a wife, a mother, a grandmother and a child of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond Porter and Alice Washington, siblings, Alice Mae Ely, Ada McShepard, Mary Minter, James Porter, and Joseph Washington and step-son Edward Thomas.
To celebrate her life Sally leaves, her husband of 43 years, Alonza D Thomas, daughter Kimberly Porter, son John Ross Jr. a brother, Charles (Rita) Washington, granddaughter Joneise (Matthew) Fizar step children: Derek (Rhonda), Stanley, Bradley (Jackie), Erwin (Latoyna) Mary and Kari Thomas; step grandchildren LaTrice Jackson, Derek Thomas Jr., Madison, Odion and Elon Thomas: and a host of dearly loved nieces and nephews.
