It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Vernell Alta Bland Compton, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, who peacefully left this world on February 1, 2025, at the age of 92.

Vernell was a lifelong champion of education, community service, and leadership. Her life was a testament to the power of compassion, resilience, entrepreneurship and unwavering dedication to helping others. Over the course of her remarkable life, Vernell left an indelible mark on her community and the many lives she touched.

Her accomplishments were many, and her legacy of service includes:

*   Project Business Consultant and Junior Achievement Teacher for five years.

*   Founder – The Coffee Ground – boutique coffee shop in Village of East Davenport

*   Isaak Walton League Plaque as a Defender of Soil, Air, Woods, Waters, and Wildlife,

*   Village of East Davenport Association Plaque for her partnership in education.

*   Black History Showdown Plaque as Coach of the Winning Team for the Martin Luther King Day Award.

*   Key to the City Award (Davenport) honors by former Mayor Thomas Hart.

*   National Association of Colored Women’s Club Distinguished Award (1987).

*   Competent Toastmaster Award (1984).

*   Ladies of Distinguished Award (Quad City Chapter, 1987).

*   Pheasants Forever Donor Award (Scott County Chapter).

*   Bettendorf Armstrong School Appreciation Award honor - Teacher of the Day.

*   Vista Volunteer for America Certificate of Appreciation Awardee, signed by President George H.W. Bush, for her 25 years of service.

*   Blacks in Government (Quad City Chapter) Certificate.

*   NAACP Secretary and Assistant Secretary (Metro Com Branch).

*   Semper Fidelis Club Life Member – served as President, Secretary and Assistant Secretary.

Vernell was a devoted member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church since 1962, where she served as Sunday School Superintendent, Teacher, YPD Member, Trustee, Finance Department Member, Usher Board President, Vacation Bible School Leader, and Special Projects Chair. Her faith and dedication to her church family were an integral part of her life.

A lifelong learner, Vernell was a proud graduate of Blackhawk Junior College and St. Ambrose College with a BA in Business Administration, setting an example for future generations of the importance of education.

Vernell’s professional career included employment at Alcoa Aluminum Company as an HR Administrative Assistant for 25 years, owner and operator of the Coffee Ground boutique for 5 years, and 20 years as a Tax Professional for H & R Block.

She is survived by her loving family: her brother, Troy Bland; her sister, Marlene Bland; her daughter, Karen Orozco Gutierrez; her son, Glenn Perkins; her grandson, Taylor Perkins; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. Her love, kindness, and generosity will forever be cherished in their hearts.

A celebration of Vernell’s life will be held on February 12, 2025, at 9:00 AM (Visitation) - 10:00 AM (Homecoming) - Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church 323 West 11th Street Davenport, Iowa 52803 - where family and friends will gather to honor her incredible journey and contributions. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Church or Charity of your choice.

Vernell Alta Bland Compton lived a life of purpose, selfless service, and unwavering love. Her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. May she rest in peace.
